Pediatricians

Dr. Brad Alpert is a board certified pediatrician, a diplomat of the American Board of Pediatrics, and a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Texas at Austin. After obtaining his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical School at Houston, he completed an internship and residency in pediatrics at the University of Texas Medical School at San Antonio. He has done postdoctoral fellowship training in children’s lung diseases at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center and forensic pediatrics at Brown University School of Medicine. Dr. Alpert has served on the pediatric faculties of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, Temple University School of Medicine, and the University of Texas Medical School at Houston. Before joining Pediatrics West, he practiced at Wachusett Pediatrics in Westminster, MA where he was the founder and president. His clinical interests include asthma and other lung disease, allergies, and acid reflux.

Dr. Andreas Athanasiou is a board certified pediatrician and received his medical degree from the University of Athens, Greece, in 1970. He completed pediatric residency at Roosevelt Hospital, NYC and was Pediatric Chief Resident at Beth Israel Hospital from 1973 to 1974. Dr. Athanasiou also completed a fellowship in Pediatric Hematology and Oncology at the New England Medical Center Boston and was an instructor in pediatrics at Tufts University School of Medicine. Dr. Athanasiou on Active staff at Lowell General Hospital and has been an active member of the Emerson Hospital Medical Staff since 1983.

Dr. Russell Coleman is a board certified pediatrician and received his medical degree from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry after completing his undergraduate study at Cornell University, New York. He completed his pediatric residency at Children’s Medical Center of Dayton, Ohio in 1995. Dr. Coleman’s interests include asthma and allergies, school problems, and the use of computers in medicine. Dr. Coleman is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and a Diplomat of the American Board of Pediatrics. He also serves as the school physician for both the Groton-Dunstable and Ayer school systems. Dr. Coleman is a member of the courtesy staff at Lowell General Hospital and has been an active member of the Emerson Hospital Medical Staff since 1997.

Dr. Joan Eagan is a board certified pediatrician who completed her undergraduate study at the University of Virginia and Post Baccalaureate Pre Med Program at Tufts University. She received her medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine and completed the Boston Combined  Residency Program at Children’s Hospital  Boston and  Boston Medical Center. Her clinical interests include well child care, newborn medicine, adolescent medicine, and sports medicine. Dr. Eagan serves as the school physician for the Westford school system, is a member of the courtesy staff at Lowell General Hospital, and has been an active member of the Emerson Hospital Medical Staff since 2005. She is also the  Assistant  Chair  of  the Dept  of Pediatrics  at  Emerson.

Dr. Mark Francis is a board certified pediatrician who joined Pediatrics west in October 2003. He previously practiced for many years in both Townsend and Harvard. Dr. Francis received his medical degree from the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester and completed his residency at the UMass Medical Center, also in Worcester. His clinical interests include well child care, school health, and ADD/ADHD and other behavioral issues. Dr. Francis serves as the school physician for Lawrence Academy and as a consultant for several area daycares, and he enjoys being active in the community in which he both lives and works. Dr. Francis is a member of the courtesy staff at Lowell General Hospital and has been an active member of the Emerson Hospital Medical Staff since 2003.

Dr. Karen Hiltunen is a board certified pediatrician. She completed her undergraduate study at Harvard University and received her medical degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. She completed her residency and internship at University of Massachusetts Memorial Medical Center in Worcester. Her clinical interests include well child care, asthma and allergies, and newborn care. Dr. Hiltunen previously practiced pediatrics in Harvard, MA, is a member of the courtesy staff at Lowell General Hospital, and has been an active member of the Emerson Hospital Medical Staff since 2002.

Dr. Michelle Sanders is a board certified pediatrician. She completed her undergraduate work at Williams College and then spent four years teaching high school before earning her medical degree from Yale University School of Medicine.  She completed her residency at Massachusetts General Hospital for Children in Boston. Her clinical interests include newborn care, well child care, growth and development of former preemies, and care of children with complex medical issues. Dr. Sanders is a member of the courtesy staff at Lowell General Hospital and has been an active member of the Emerson Hospital Medical Staff since 2002.

Dr. James Sheehy is a board certified pediatrician. He is a Lexington native and received his undergraduate degree from Tufts University. He received his medical degree from Drexel University College of Medicine and completed his residency at Tufts University Baystate Medical Center where he served an extra year as chief resident. His clinical interests include well child care, preventative medicine, musculoskeletal disorders, dermatology, and adolescent medicine. Dr. Sheehy is a member of the courtesy staff at Lowell General Hospital and has been an active member of the Emerson Hospital Medical Staff since 2009.

Dr. Susan Voute is a board certified pediatrician. She completed her undergraduate study at John Carroll University and received her medical degree from University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester. She also completed her residency at University of Massachusetts Memorial Medical Center in Worcester. Her clinical interests include newborn care, well child care, and adolescent medicine. Dr. Voute previously practiced pediatrics in Webster, MA. Dr. Voute has been an active member of the Emerson Hospital Medical Staff since 2013.

 

Dr. David Watson is a board certified pediatrician and received his medical degree from Sydney University Medical School, Australia. He completed residencies at Mater Hospital in Australia, Greenwich Hospital and Whittington Hammersmith, both in London, and Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children in Sydney, Australia. Dr. Watson also completed a fellowship in cardiology at Children’s Hospital in Boston. His special clinical interest is Sports Medicine for children and young adults. Dr. Watson is a member of the courtesy staff at Lowell General Hospital and has been an active member of the Emerson Hospital Medical Staff since 1976.
Dr. Watson is no longer actively practicing or accepting new patients.

Dr. Lazaros Xanthopoulos is a board certified pediatrician.  He received his undergraduate degree at Brandeis University in Biology and Classical studies.  He attended medical school at Boston University and received his pediatric training at Floating Hospital Tufts Medical Center in Boston.  Dr Xanthopoulos has practiced pediatric care in the Merrimack Valley since 2002.  His interests in primary pediatric care include well child care, adolescent medicine, acne, and sports medicine. Dr Xanthopoulos is currently school physician for the Westford and Tyngsboro public school districts and a consultant to the Lighthouse School, a special needs school in Chelmsford. He is on staff at Lowell General and Emerson Hospitals and occasionally practices inpatient care at these hospitals. He also serves as a Board member of the IPA at Emerson Hospital.  Dr Xanthopoulos practices full time in the Westford location.
